Sound Investments: Building Immigrants’ Skills to Fuel Economic Growth

This report emphasizes the importance of immigrants in the U.S. economy and examines three major pathways for building immigrant skills: school, workplace education, and self-employment. While many immigrants are highly educated, still many are not and lack both English proficiency and knowledge of U.S. culture and systems that could help them navigate the workforce more effectively. Despite the economic advantages that can accrue to states and localites that promote immigrant education and skills development, the report notes there are surprisingly few major efforts underway. Community college examples cited: I-BEST, El Paso Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Northern Virginia Community College, and Central Piedmont Community College.
