Providing Immigrants a Springboard into the Workforce

Portland Community College, in Portland, Oregon, a state leader in implementing integrated education and training programs, has developed an innovative Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Career Pathways program. It offers ESL learners, immigrants, and others an accelerated path to simultaneously master employer-requested skills and ESL contextualized academic content, while also earning an industry-recognized college certificate. The Portland Community College story is one in a series of case studies examining findings from CCCIE’s National Survey on Increasing Opportunities for New Americans and offers colleges a look at how to structure a model program.
