CCCIE Members in the Spotlight

CCCIE’s Blue Ribbon Panelists have presented at numerous conferences this fall, sharing promising practices in the field of immigrant education and sparking interest among community college educators across the nation. Here’s the BRP presentation line-up: 

  • Anson Green and Carrie Tupa, Alamo Community Colleges, presented on “Bold Innovations @ Alamo Colleges: Implementing Innovative Assessment and College Credit Training Models for Underserved Adults” at the Annual Conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, held Oct. 29-31 in San Antonio, TX.   • Teresita Wisell and Jill Casner-Lotto, Westchester Community College; Margie McHugh, Migration Policy Institute; Heide Spruck Wrigley; Literacywork International; Paul Feltman, World Education Services; and Kathy Cooper, Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges participated in the fourth annual National Immigrant Integration Conference, held Oct. 23-26 in Seattle, WA, and attracting over 750 people:

Margie McHugh, a key planner for the conference, organized the Adult ELL, Economic and Workforce Development track and presented on or moderated several panels, including a plenary session on “A New Look at Immigrant Children and Education.”

Teresita Wisell presented on the panel: “Redesigning Community Colleges to Support Immigrant Students’ Success,” sharing highlights from CCCIE’s new report, Increasing Opportunities for Immigrant Students: Community College Srategies for Success by Jill Casner-Lotto and a case study example of WCC’s Gateway Center; 

Paul Feltman and Tere Wisell joined several others on the panel “Do I Have to Start Over? Best Practices in Helping Immigrant Professionals Re-Establish Their Careers,” a training session offered by IMPRINT, a new national coalition to raise awareness about the talents and contributions of immigrant professionals.

Heide Spruck Wrigley presented on “Digital Learning and Adult ESL” for the “Innovations in Adult English Language Learning” panel.

Kathy Cooper presented “Lessons from I-BEST: Moving More Immigrants Farther and Faster to Self-Sufficiency” for the panel “Thinking Big Despite Shrinking Resources: Innovation and Systemic Change.”

  • Madeline Roman-Vargas, Wilbur Wright College, presented at the National Council of La Raza Workforce Development Forum, held Oct. 11-12, in Chicago, IL, on Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center’s Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment Program with three ASPIRA high schools in Chicago for the panel “Game-Changers: Reversing Demographic Destiny for Latino Youth.”
  • Teresita Wisell, Jill Casner-Lotto, and Anson Green presented on “Supporting Immigrant Student Success: A Critical National Imperative” at the National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Symposium, held Sept. 22-24 in San Antonio, TX.
